Collage

Today we learn't to create a digital collage. We had to choose a New Zealand native bird that we would draw onto a google drawing. Then we pasted a background in.

Toki Pounamu Film Festival

Toki Pounamu Film Festival

On the 14th of November the senior school from Karoro went down to the
regent to see the first school Film Festival. Karoro school, paparoa range,
Kaniere School, Paroa School, St Patricks, Kumara School, and Blaketown
School competed and came to watch the Toki Pounamu Film Festival.

My favourite movie was Town Robber done by some students from Paroa school,
Sammi Fahey, Pippa Robb, and Caitlan Boddy. I personally liked this film
because it had a humorous background and had more than two characters.
In this film there is a news reporter, reporting a crime scene. A robber had
stolen a lot of money. They had two cops on the job trying to find the robber
in the end they find him sleeping in a little alleyway. The two cops chase him
in a funny way and tackle him to the ground. I really liked this film because it
was really funny.

I think that the film festival was a good idea. It is where students can learn
new things about making new movies and using different apps. I personally
thought that the film festival was all right. I think it would be a good idea if you
didn't have a topic to choose from because that would be a bit more exciting.

Kowhaiwhai Art

                                                   Moana

For He Kākano we had to create Kowhaiwhai patterns on canvases.
We had to know what our pattern meant. We also got to choose whether we
chose to do a modern or traditional patterns. Me and Grace chose to do a
traditional kowhaiwhai pattern surrounded by our own art. Our Mahi toi
represents the Moana. At the top there are dolphins jumping out of the water.
The kowhaiwhai pattern in the middle represents the cutting of a waka on
waves ( water). The paua shell is magical. The dolphins swore an oath to
protect the Moana. In return, the Paua shell would give half of its colour
and sparkle to the dolphins. That is why on half of the paua shell all you can
see is its underneath Maori patterns. We used a range of colours to represent
and show the beauty of the Moana. We also wanted to show that not only
above the sea is beautiful;below is too.

Aimee and I found 5 Birds, 1 Ant , 0 Worms, 0 Spiders, 3 Snails, and 1 Cockroach shell. Next time we could've looked for the Insects on a sunny day as there could be more insects that would be surfacing.  The most common insect was a Bird because the Birds would have been eating the insects that lie on the ground.

Embedding Screencastify

Today we worked with Ms Minehan. We had to find a piece of work that we could screencastify and then put on our blogs. I decided to put a poem on my blog, I chose My Selfie Poem. We were learning how to embed a screencastify video and put it on our blogs. We are also learning how to make a quality blog post. I thought that embedding the screencastify was easier than downloading it.

Jake Bailey Recount

On Wednesday the 31st of July Jake Bailey came to Karoro school to
talk to rooms 7, 1, and 8, about his battle with cancer and the life lessons
he learnt.

Jake Bailey came to Greymouth with the life education trust. Jake talked
about his battle with cancer. He had Burkitt's Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma,
which is the fastest growing cancer in the world, and he survived.
Then after telling the story about his battle with cancer he talked about the
life lessons he learned when going through cancer. He said that if you are
always resilient, kind respectful then you will know that you are a good person.
Then he said that you can fake being brave as long as you don’t show how
you feel on the inside and keep moving forward.

After he talked about being brave he talked about happiness.
Jake said that ‘happiness is a skill you have to learn’. He also talked about
worries. He said ‘don't worry about the small things in life focus on the bigger
issues’. As well as talking about the worries in life he also talked about the
fears he had before cancer and how he overcame them.

His message to us was ‘we have a responsibility to live our lives not only for
us but for the children who can’t’. I think that Jake Bailey is an amazing person.
After his speech, it changed how I thought of worrying about the smaller things.

Refugee Book Review

Refugee Review
Name: Grace
Age 12:
Class: Karoro school Room 8
Do you want to read an adventurous and anticipation story? This book is waiting for you!
Refugee is a non- fiction story written by Alan Gratz. Refugee is an adventurous and a
dramatic story. It is an engaging story and you will be sitting on the edge of your seat
waiting to see what happens next.

Refugee is set Germany, Cuba and Syria. It also goes between America, Macedonia and
Serbia.

The main characters in Refugee are Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud. All three amazing
characters are children and are having to leave their homes (and countries). They are
all looking for a home where they would be safe to live their lives. They are between
the ages of 11 and 12.

Refugee has three stories in one. All three children connect together at the end of the
story. Refugee is mainly about three children who have to go on an adventurous but
dangerous trip trying to find a secure home for themselves to live in. They have to go
through dangerous seas and cross countries without suspicion. The three families have
to go on a horrendous journey hoping that they will make their destination.

Refugee made me think how scared kids would be having to go through war, and hoping
that the next day would be a good one. Refugee also connects to me because the kids
are all around my age.

I think that this story would have definitely happened to a lot of kids. I think that it
would be an atrocious and scary place to be those three children. I really enjoyed
reading Refugee because it was a breathtaking book.

I recommend this book 11+ because there is some violence like war and guns.
