Maui Legends

As part of Matariki we re-read the legends of Maui. We then retold a legend and created artwork. Below is my work.

Long, long ago, there lived a man called Maui. One evening Maui was sitting by a fire, wondering what it would be like to have no fire. So that night when everyone was asleep, Maui took jars of water and put out every fire in the village. The next morning everyone in the village was furious with Maui.    “You annoying person,” they cried. “Now you have to go south to the volcano and get us more fire!” Nobody wanted to go with Maui, but as he walked towards the volcano his friends the birds joined him. Piwakawaka, Hihi, Tui, Rupe and Huia flew to be with him and Pukeko and Kiwi wanted to come too. The volcano was many miles away from the village. The landscape was dry and bare. Deep in the heart of the volcano Maui saw a flicker of flame. He told his friends the birds to wait for him by the stream and he went in alone. He climbed over the boulders and saw an old woman sitting by a fire. ‘She has to be my Aunty Mahuika, the Goddess of fire Maui thought. “Kia ora Aunty,” said Maui. “All the fires in the village have gone out, so can I have one of yours?” Mahuika lifted up her gnarled hands. At each tip of her fingers there burned a flickering flame. She removed a flame from her thumb and gave it to Maui. “ Be very careful with this flame, it is sacred” Mahuika said. Maui cupped the flame in his hands very carefully. Surprisingly it did not burn him. “I have got some magic fire, but I still don’t know how fire is made” said Maui to the birds. “So I will go back”. Maui threw the flame into the stream. “Aunty Mahuika, the flame went out. Can I have another one, please?” Mahuika sighed, “Take more care of this flame Maui, these flames are very precious”. So Maui went back to his friends and threw the flame into the stream again. Every time Maui was given a flame he got rid of it and made up an excuse. “Oh Aunty, I dropped it! The wind blew it out. A bird flew down and took it. It started to rain and the flame went out. I sneezed and it went out. A Taniwha stepped on it.” When Mahuika was down to her last flame she was very furious. “Maui!” She cried. “No more. You have nearly taken all my flames. There is only one left now.” Maui tried to take the last flame from the tip of her finger. Mahuika flew into a rage. She stamped her foot and flames roared up out of the earth. Maui fled as fast as his waewae (legs) could take him. Mahuika erupted into flames like lava pouring out of a volcano. Maui said the magical karakia and changed into a hawk, as Mahuika threw her last flame far into the tops of the kaikomako trees. Later when the flames had died down, Maui came back to the kaikomako tree and climbed up high to the top of it. He snapped of a few branches and carrying them in his hands he took them to his home in the north. “I am absolutely sure that Mahuika’s last flame is in these branches,” said Maui to the people of his tribe. Maui took a kaikomako branch and rubbed it against a piece of mahoe wood. “Come out flame” Maui said. “I know you're in here.” He breathed on the wood and rubbed it harder. Very slowly a flame started to appear. The people of Maui’s tribe never had to worry about losing fire ever again!

Persuasive Writing-Why We Should Have Pets

We did a persuasive writing on pets, whether we were against them or for them. Here is my work please leave a kind, positive and helpful comment.

Title
A Short Statement about the topic.
eg. ‘Rugby League Is A Great Sport’

You Should Have Pets.

Overview/ Statement of position
A brief statement of your view about the topic.  What you believe or want to argue.
I believe that having pets is a great thing. You should have pets!

Series of Arguments
Reasons
Your points supporting your view about the topic.  Your arguments to support your statement and information to support these arguments.

Primarily, pets are fun to play with. When you are feeling down, they give you company and like to cuddle you. Pets are good for people because they can keep you fit, by taking them for a walk. Having pets are awesome because they like playing with you. It is fun walking pets, cuddling and playing with your pets.

Secondly, pets are great for people with disabilities, like blind people who find it hard to shop for food and walk around. There is lots of other things pets can do, like they can sense people that might have cancer. They can also tell if people are low or high in sugar (if they have diabetes).  Pets are a lot of help for blind people because they can help them walk around. Pets are also great with sensing things, like  diabetes and cancer. They can sense someone with cancer and they can tell if someone with diabetes is high or low. Pets are a great thing to have.

In Addition, pets keep you safe. They guard you from all sorts of things, like people that want to rob your house, they can guard you from other animals that are trying to attack you. Pets like to   stand by you and keep you safe. Pets also look after you. Like when you have a fall your pet will be there and do anything to help. They also like to keep an eye on you to make sure you are safe. YOU NEED TO GET A PET THEY ARE GREAT!

Finally, Pets are GREAT because they can give you food! Cows can give you milk that you can make into cream that you can turn into butter then that you can turn into cheese, and then you can have any of those to eat. Goats can also give you milk but it is a little different, Guess what you can also make goat cheese! YOU NEED TO GET A PET!

Concluding statement
Summing it up.  A summary of your arguments and your view on the topic.

In conclusion, I think having a pet or pets is a great thing. I think that you should have a pet because they are fun to play with and hang out with, they can help with disabilities like diabetes,  They like to keep you safe like guarding you, They can give you food like milk. These are my reasons why you should have a pet.

Persuasive Writing-Why Should We Fix Our Field

We have been having a go at writing a piece of persuasive writing. Here is my piece of writing about why we should fix our field.

Title
A Short Statement about the topic.
eg. ‘Rugby League Is A Great Sport’

Fix Our Field

Overview/ Statement of position
A brief statement of your view about the topic.  What you believe or want to argue.
I strongly believe that our field should be fixed now and farst! These are the reasons why we need our field. We have tournaments that we need to train for, our equipment is going to waste while the field is out of bounds, our field takes up a lot of space and now there is less space to play games, and with our field out of bounds we are losing equipment over the fence. For these reasons our field needs to be fixed.

Series of Arguments
Reasons
Your points supporting your view about the topic.  Your arguments to support your statement and information to support these arguments.

Remember

-supporting detail, reasons, examples

Firstly, we need our field to train for sport like soccer, rippa rugby and lots of other sport. We need to train for our sport so that we can get better and learn more, and with out the field it is hard for us to train for our hakinakina. We have to train for our sport on the concrete because our field is out of bounds.

Secondly, we need to make use of our sports equipment which cost a lot of money and is now going to waste. Most of our sport equipment is more fun to play on the field but there is no field to use that equipment. We won’t the field so that we can play with the hakinakina equipment.

Thirdly, our field takes up a lot of our space to play and without a field there is less space to play games. The school is overcrowded with only the court area to play games like soccer and lots more. We want our field back and we want it now!

Finally, with the field out of bounds, we are losing our equipment over the maihe, and the teachers are the only people who can get them. We have to wait for ages to get the teachers and for them to get the equipment back over the fence.

Concluding statement
Summing it up.  A summary of your arguments and your view on the topic.

In conclusion we need to fix our whira because we need the field for training for our sport, our sport equipment is out of use because the field is out of           bonds, we don’t have enough room to play, we keep on losing our equipment over the fence and onto the field. It is vital that we need a pai whira for our school!
